Grassland ecosystems are unique and important natural habitats that are found across various parts in our country. Unfortunately, in our country grasslands are generally viewed as wastelands, as barren and unproductive areas. By prioritizing an increase in green cover, government authorities have ordered the plantation of trees in many grasslands, unknowingly destroying the fragile ecosystem that thrives there. India is home to four species of bustards and all of them are predominantly grassland species! The smallest of these bustard species, the Lesser Florican is listed as Endangered in the IUCN’s Red List.
The Jhalana Doongri Industrial Area near Jaipur harbours an unlikely 20-square-kilometre oasis. Jhalana offers topographical diversity with hills, valleys, plateaus, sand dunes, nallahs and gullies. The area has increasingly received attention after the state government’s ambitious Project Leopard was introduced to protect the apex predators here. Leopards are in a plenty here, which boosts the chances of some great sightings! Other attractions are Jackals, Hyenas, Blue Bulls, Spotted Deer and more than 150 species of birds!
